Stopping Cavities With Natural-Looking Dental Fillings

In our last blog, we took a look at how we create and place crowns in one visit. But what if you have a cavity, one that doesn’t need a full crown? Well, we can still offer our Tucson, AZ, patients tooth repair in one visit with our natural-looking and metal-free dental fillings. Find out how we place these restorations and safeguard smiles, all in a single visit.

Toothaches and Tooth Decay

When people attend routine six-month checkups, we can identify cavities in the earliest possible stages. Otherwise, most people are unaware they need treatment until they begin to experience tooth sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks, or toothaches. Don’t ignore persistent pain in your smile, see us for an examination right away. A cavity forms when bacteria is no longer held back by outer enamel. When poor oral hygiene weakens enamel, or a chip or fracture damages the outer enamel, bacteria can reach the inner dentin can lead to cavities. Treatment is important because without care, the cavity could eventually lead to a dental infection.

The Causes of a Cavity

Poor oral hygiene enables bacteria to break down food particles, a process that elevates oral acidity and allows plaque, a bacteria byproduct, to form on the teeth. Over time, plaque begins to weaken and erode the enamel. Factors behind this process include the consumption of sugary foods and drinks, consuming foods high in starch, lack of daily brushing and flossing, and not attending routine six-month cleanings to have the plaque buildup removed. Which means that taking care of your smile each day from home and main time to see us twice a year can help you stay cavity-free!

Treatment with Lifelike Fillings

If we find you have a cavity, we may place a filling to treat the smile. Our team will begin by removing the decay and then thoroughly cleaning the tooth. We next prepare the filling material, a metal-free composite resin that we can shade to blend with the smile. We apply the material and then shape the tooth as we cure the composite resin under a light. Finally, we polish the tooth to help ensure a more natural appearance. The entire process only takes a single visit to complete, and safeguards your smile against the risk of a dental infection.
