Signs that You Probably Have Gum Disease

Even if you know what gum disease is and the potential consequences it can have on your smile, you may not immediately recognize it if you start to show signs of it. That’s because the most common symptoms of gum disease aren’t obvious at first, and many people can experience significant periodontal troubles before they seek treatment from their dentist. To help you avoid such consequences, we take a look at some of the signs that you probably have gum disease and that you should visit your dentist as soon as possible.

Your gums bleed occasionally

One of the most obvious signs that your gums are diseased is if they bleed slightly when you brush and floss your teeth. Gum disease’s first stage, gingivitis, is an infection in your gums, and the damage harmful oral bacteria cause can lead to the tissues to bleed whenever pressure is applied to them. Though your gums may not hurt, you should visit your dentist as soon as possible if you notice even a little bit of blood mixed in with your toothpaste.

Your bad breath sticks around

Besides damaging your gums until they bleed, gum disease can also cause persistent bad breath due to the accumulation of oral bacteria. Unlike morning breath, it doesn’t go away just by brushing and flossing your teeth. If you have chronic halitosis and aren’t sure why, then your dentist should perform an examination as soon as possible to determine if it’s because of gum disease.

Your gums are receding

As gums become diseased, they also become irritated enough to start separating from your teeth (receding). As they do, the pockets that form allow more bacteria to accumulate underneath your gums, exacerbating the infection and inflammation to make your gum disease even worse.
