3 Easy Ways to Prevent Cavities

Cavities are the culmination of a few different things. For instance, if you have poor hygiene practices, then oral bacteria can accumulate more than usual on your teeth. If you snack often or indulge in sugar-rich snacks and beverages, then you give those bacteria what they need to produce tooth-eroding acids. Because there are several factors that go into a cavity’s formation, there are also several different aspects that go into preventing it. Today, we take a look at three of the most common factors and what you can do to more easily prevent cavities from forming.

1. Don’t skip brushing and flossing

Your toothbrush and floss are your daily tools against oral bacteria accumulation. Known as plaque, the film these bacteria form clings to your teeth and protects the microbes from being washed away by saliva. To remove them, you must brush your teeth at least twice every day and floss at least once. Otherwise, they’ll quickly grow strong enough to cause one or more cavities.

2. Drink more water every day

The reason saliva’s a threat to your oral bacteria is because it’s made almost entirely of water, which naturally neutralizes harmful microbes. You can boost your saliva production and add a boost to its bacteria-rinsing abilities by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

3. See your dentist often

Typically, at least once every six months is often enough for effective dental checkups and cleanings. Your dentist and hygienist will thoroughly clean away the plaque and tartar (calcified plaque) that has accumulated on your teeth, ensuring that they can’t grow strong enough to infect your teeth.
