Why Do So Many People Get Cavities?

Besides stains on your teeth, cavities are the most common chronic dental issue for both children and adults. Yet, they’re also one of the most easily preventable conditions, with the right dental health care and maintenance. This can beg the question, if they’re so preventable, then why do so many people get cavities? The truth is that, while simple, successful cavity prevention requires consistency. Even one slip in your dental hygiene routine and a cavity can have a chance to develop before you notice it.

How Cavities Form

The plaque that clings to your teeth is made of hundreds of kinds of bacteria, and certain kinds produce harmful acids and toxins that erode your tooth enamel. When enough bacteria gather and produce enough acids, they can create a hole in your enamel that bacteria can slip through to reach your main tooth structure. The resulting infection, called tooth decay, causes a cavity to form, which will continue to grow until you have it treated.

Why Prevention Sometimes Fails

If even a small spot of plaque is left after brushing and flossing your teeth, it will calcify into tartar and you won’t be able to clean it away with your toothbrush. As time goes by, the bacteria that tartar protects can multiply and cause significant damage to your tooth enamel, leading to cavity development before your next dental checkup and cleaning.

How to Treat a Cavity

In many cases, a cavity can be treated quickly and discreetly with a tooth-colored filling; a biocompatible material that your dentist places inside of the cavity. After carefully cleaning away lingering bacteria and infected tooth structure, your dentist will use a small amount of tooth-colored composite resin to seal the cavity and restore your tooth.
