Skip the Sweets and Opt for Fun, Sugar-free Treats

If you’d like to give the kids something to smile about this Halloween, that won’t send them for fillings later in the year, there are lots of fun dentist-approved alternatives. Nobody ever said you have to dole out confections, after all, to have a spooky good time. Here are some great ideas for trick-or-treaters, that aren’t sugar-filled or candy-based, plus a few preventive tips on how to keep those young smiles healthy, even if you do decide to enjoy a few pieces of candy here and there.

Think Outside the Candy Wrapper

While candy has long been considered the traditional “treat” for Halloween goers, there are no rules that say you have to hand it out. Instead, look to the toy aisle for some non-edible alternatives that will be just as fun for your young guests, for example:

  • Small yoyos, puzzles or games
  • Stickers or temporary tattoos, especially Halloween-themed
  • Pencils and novelty erasers, or mini packs of crayons (all perfect for budding artists)
  • Glow sticks, bracelets, necklaces, etc.
  • Halloween-related toys like classic spider rings and plastic fangs

Give Food with Nutritional Power

If you insist on giving out something edible, there are definitely healthier alternatives to all those sugar-filled treats. Consider all-natural, no-sugar added options, which provide more nutritional punch and aren’t as detrimental to teeth. Options include:

  • Small boxes of raisins or cranberries
  • Individual-sized applesauce or small apples
  • Juice boxes (so long as they’re low sugar, make sure to check the label)
  • Crackers, pretzels and similar savory treats

Planning a Party?

If you’re hosting a soiree, other kid favorites that make great party fare include yogurt in pouches or popsicle form (again, look for no-added sugar varieties), string cheese, veggie sticks and fruit slices, all of which are portable and perfectly-sized for small guests. Plus, calcium-rich foods can be great for developing teeth!
