A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic appliance, meaning it is not something that you can remove. Its stability helps you because you can count on it to bite and chew food, and also to stay secure whenever you speak and laugh. The appliance consists of at least one pontic (replacement tooth), and it is surrounded by a pair of dental crowns that are placed over your teeth. When in position, you can be happy to see that your bridge improves the quality of your smile while also giving you more support to bite and chew in a way that feels natural to you!
Dental bridges do not require oral surgery to place. What will happen instead is that the crowns at the ends of your bridge will be placed over your teeth to keep the appliance firmly in position. Careful measurements are taken before your bridge is placed, so that when it is in position it looks natural and feels comfortable.
Dental bridges are not the only permanent appliances available. You can also talk to your dentist about using a dental implant to hold a replacement tooth for you! The implant is surgically set in place in the space where your roots were previously located. When you have this post in position, your jawbone will fuse to it as you heal – this process, known as osseointegration, helps to make sure the prosthetic remains securely held over the years. One benefit to a dental implant is that it stimulates your jawbone whenever you bite and chew. This allows you to sustain the bone, and avoid density loss that occurs after tooth loss.
