A dental emergency is simply any damage or injury the teeth and gums sustain. If you end up with a chipped tooth or sudden pain, then you should see your Tucson, AZ, dentist as soon as possible. In today’s blog, we’re looking at how to respond to common dental emergency situations.
If you chip a tooth, try to pick up any pieces you can and bring them with you to the office. If this proves impossible, don’t worry, the tooth will still be treated. If you receive an injury to the mouth but don’t see any damage, then still see us. A fracture may be practically invisible, but still allow tooth decay and infection to form by exposing the sensitive inner tooth structure to bacteria. In route to the office, you may place a cold compress against the side of the face to reduce swelling. You can also use a piece of cloth or gauze to stem any bleeding.
If you knock out a tooth, then remember to pick it up by the crown, never touch the roots. Rinse the tooth under water to remove any dirt, but take care not to remove any tissue. Then, place the tooth in a glass of milk or salt water and bring it with you to the office.
If something becomes caught between your teeth and you cannot remove it using floss, see us for treatment. Never use anything other than floss to remove an object lodged between the teeth, or you could end up damaging the gums. A sudden and persistent toothache could also be a sign that you need treatment, so don’t ignore any sudden pain in your tooth.
If a filling or crown becomes loose or lost, see us right away. Try to avoid any sugary foods and drinks until we see you to prevent discomfort, as the exposed teeth will be very sensitive.
If you have a broken or damaged tooth, then see us as soon as possible.
