What to Do if Your Tooth Cracks

Structurally speaking, a crack in your tooth may not be as bad as a piece breaking off of it. However, both the pain and the threat to your oral health can be equally severe, especially if you don’t treat the cracked tooth soon enough. The good news is that your dentist can offer a number of personalized treatments to restore your tooth by fixing the damage and protecting your healthy tooth structure. In the meantime, we also offer a few tips to help alleviate the pain and prevent damaging your tooth further until you can schedule an emergency appointment.

Tips for Dealing with a Cracked Tooth

  • Once you notice your cracked tooth, rinse your mouth carefully with warm water, carefully swishing the water around the tooth to rinse away any debris. If the tooth is bleeding, then bite down gently on clean gauze until the bleeding stops.
  • If the tooth hurts, then take an over-the-counter pain reliever to take the edge off until you make it to your dentist’s office. You can also apply an ice pack to the area of your face where the tooth rests to numb the area and reduce swelling.
  • Refrain from eating or drinking anything until after you’ve visited your dentist. Treating a cracked tooth often requires cleaning the tooth carefully to remove harmful oral bacteria and particles that could lead to tooth decay and infection. If you eat or drink, then it could complicate the cleaning part of your restoration.
