While dental fillings were once made predominantly from a metal amalgam, there were several limitations to such treatments. First, they were not a suitable restorative solution for patients with metal allergies or sensitivities. Secondly, the high conductivity level of metal caused many patients discomfort when trying to enjoy their meals. Finally, there were obvious esthetic drawbacks to using noticeable metal fillings to help restore smiles.
Fortunately, modern dental fillings can be made of a much more cosmetically-pleasing and comfortable material, called composite resin.
Composite resin offers a number of benefits, when compared to metal fillings. First, as the term tooth-colored fillings implies, a composite resin filling is made to closely match a patient’s natural teeth, so that others don’t notice that restorative work has been completed; they only see a beautiful smile. Secondly, this resin actually bonds tightly with teeth, providing great protection against further decay, and it conducts less heat than metal, making it a more comfortable form of restoration for many patients.
